Symbol Story
A symbol of the Jellyfish Pavilion’s inclusive spirit, playful harmony and co-creation!
The Pavilion’s official symbol and logo embody the strong commitment and aspirations of the Jellyfish Project and the Jellyfish Team toward a future society where diverse lives can shine. The symbol represents the value found in vulnerability, and our wish to explore together the richness of life that comes from the fact that each of us, in our unique way, is a minority.
The symbol is composed of eight distinctive colors, each carrying its own meaning.
The Jellyfish (KURAGE) Project logo and symbol were born from the co-creation and harmony of many people’s five senses, in the spirit of “anonymous creators.”
When creating the symbol (logo) of the Jellyfish Project, it was decided to not commission a single artist or designer. Instead, we asked ourselves whether we could discover a symbol that, like the “anonymous poems” of the Manyoshu, might emerge naturally from people living, meeting, and sensing one another’s presence.
In January 2023, at Hitotsunagi Café in Higashiosaka City, a diverse group of people gathered: people who are blind or have low vision, people who are deaf or hard of hearing, wheelchair users, seniors, partner companies and collaborators from many industries, musicians, teachers, artists, children, researchers, and participants of many nationalities and genders. Together with a blind pianist as guest performer and the improvisational music of the KURAGE Band, everyone engaged in a joyful, messy co-creation, covered in paint, expressing themselves through all five senses.
From the murals created that day on the walls and ceiling, we all searched for an image that truly represented the spirit of the Pavilion. What emerged is the current Jellyfish Pavilion symbol.
Eight Colors of “Invigorating Lives”
The symbol incorporates eight distinctive colors. In Japanese culture, the number eight has long been considered a "good omen." The number 8 represents all directions, the whole world, as well as abundance. 8 also symbolizes our vision of a creative and inclusive society where people of all ages, from newborns to 120-year-olds, can live and shine together.
